The Worm

The Muni brand logo nicknamed “The Worm” has been a staple of San Francisco's visual urban landscape since 1975 and is a testament to enduring design. Created by Walter Landor, founder of the esteemed Landor Associates, this deceptively simple emblem has served as the face of our city's transit system for nearly five decades. The intertwined "M" and arrow, rendered in distinctive red orange, cleverly symbolize movement and interconnectedness. Many look at this mark as a symbolic reference to the streets, hills and valleys of San Francisco. Beyond its functional role, the logo has transcended into a cultural icon, adorning everything from cable cars, buses and more. Landor's creation remains a prime example of effective transit branding and a last artifact that continues to build enduring loyalty through its longevity.
