A brief history of Muni

San Francisco's Municipal Railway, fondly called Muni, has been the city's transit backbone for over a century. Established in 1912 as one of America's first publicly owned transit systems, Muni embodies San Francisco's progressive spirit. From a single streetcar line on Geary Street, it has flourished into a comprehensive network serving the entire city.

Muni has consistently pioneered urban transportation, adapting to challenges from the 1906 earthquake to the tech boom. Today, it operates a diverse fleet of cable cars, historic streetcars, modern light rail vehicles, electric trolleybuses, and hybrid buses, serving over 700,000 daily riders.

As the city evolves, Muni remains integral to its people, fostering community connections through fast, reliable and frequent service.
